Dear Schopp Family,

I'm very sorry about the loss of a great kid. Garrett had a quiet way, but he was so motivated, and intelligent. You don't know me at all, but I had some classes with your son. I didn't know him as well as others, but I still wanted to take the time to write you a quote from Winnie the Pooh that is extremely true.

"If ever there is a tomorrow when we're not together, there is something you must always remember: you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we're apart...I will always be with you."

That is something I believe Garrett would want you to know. My prayers are with you each day and night.

We offer our deepest sympathy. When tragedy strikes and takes the life of our innocent loved ones, many cry out with great sorrow. Your tears are not unnoticed by the Creator of Life. Never was it his purpose for our human lives to be taken away. Although your deep pain will not easily disappear, prayer to God will bring comfort to you as you grieve. The Bible assures us God "is healing the broken hearted ones, and is binding up their painful spot." Psalm 147:3

Dear Leslie,John and Hannah,

We heard about the loss of your wonderful boy. We really enjoyed Garrett. He was sweet, polite, fun and so so intelligent. He was the kind of boy you hope your daughter will grow up and marry one day. I remember one night after dinner we were all talking about mountains and how high they were. Tracey said one number, John said another and Garrett gave a different elevation. Everyone knew they were right. Garrett went to goggle the information and came back with the number. He was right. I had to smile. I think that Garrett was right a lot of the times.

Know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear John and Leslie:

I am so sorry for the loss of your son Garrett. I will always remember John and Garrett working out together at the health club - it was really special to see a fine father spending quality time with his son. We don't know how much time we get on this earth before God calls us home, and I truly respect and admire John for putting aside all his many obligations so he could spend time one on one with his son. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

I would like to express my deepest sympathies. Garrett was in my Spanish class, and though I did not know him very well, he always struck me as a kind and caring person who got along with everyone. I attended the candlelight memorial for Garrett on Sunday, and it was one of the saddest and most spiritual events I have ever been a part of. Seeing as I did not know him very well, I don't want to intrude on your privacy by attending the funeral or visitation. I would just seek to remind you that everyone cared about Garrett, whether or not they come. I am so sorry.

I am so sorry for your loss, he was such a fun person to be around and so nice and accepting of others. I wanted to share with you one of the many memories I have of him. I remember we were playing the "Honey If You Love Me" game in which you have to make other people laugh, one person in our group would not laugh no matter how hard we tried, so Garrett stepped up to the plate and did a little James Bond roll and he cracked that guy, we all laughed like we shoud have been rolling on the floor! He was great at making others laugh and that's how I personally will always remember him and my heart goes out to you and the Schopp family. I hope he's in a better place now.

Dear John, Leslie and Hannah,

This is from the memorial of a very, very dear friend of mine and it brought me comfort:

I am not here. I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond's glint on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.

I am the gentle autumn's rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush,

I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not mourn me. Do not cry.

I am not here. I did not die.

Garrett will be with you always, every minute of every day. You are in my thoughts.

Hello. My name is Kendra and I was in ALT with Garrett (Arby's). My last and I think most vivid memory of Garrett was of his last facilitation. I went right before him and I'm the kind of person who is really quiet and shy. I hate it when people look at me. It was my turn and my voice was shaking and my hands were shaking. It was awful. If they hadn't known the water knot before, they wouldn't have learned anything after. Then it was Garrett's turn. He was so quiet in class but as soon as he started, he had the attention of everyone. He seemed so confident and comfortable. I was so impressed. I said to myself "Look at that. If Garrett can do it, you can do it." I don't think I'll ever forget that. I'm so sorry for your loss. I didn't talk to him as much as I wish I would have but I still miss him very much. Class isn't the same without our Arby's sauce.

John, Leslie and Hannah

May God provide you the strength you need during this terrible time, and may God grant you the knowledge that Garrett is still with you in so many ways now, and always.

My prayers are for you, John, Leslie and Hannah. I can say nothing that you have not already thought of, or offer any words that will ease the pain. But know that I, as a father, have lost a son, and truly understand what you are going through. God Bless you, and keep you in his right hand to sustain you.

May 11, 2009

the still still quiet

Of Saturday mornings

When you slept till noon

Of questions about your day

Answered by spoonfuls of pasta

Of cathedral still fishing at the lake

Scattered by rocks going ker plop

Of biting parental tongues

On your first forays in the family van

Of holding your head while

Your little body heaved sick into the toilet

Of the wet muffled gurgles

Blowing bubbles amongst coral reefs

Of the crackle of the fire

Glowing amber below golden marshmallows

Of the shhhh wind across rocky

Boulder fields high above timberline

The still still quiet

Will never quiet my love for you
